Every major software company has pushed the envelope in terms of software architecture, programming languages, databases, app development frameworks, communication protocols, even compilers and in some cases operating systems, and in more recent times search engines, and now increasingly in the field of machine learning and data sciences in general. What was considered state of art at a time soon becomes the new normal. However, it is often a great learning experience to learn why did a software company decide to implement in a certain way rather than to merely know what is it they did.
I liked this company book that has taken a light-touch treatment to how #Facebook improved upon its engineering, how did it move to #mobile, what were the #strategic and #cultural changes it made as it grew, even doing the “rethinking best practices” part! Probably, it is the last of the pre-cloud companies, so it will be interesting to learn more about how the companies that have been born on the #cloud have undertaken similar journey.
